“I am overwhelmed with this opportunity. I was already extremely honored to be selected as a delegate to the summit, and I could not believe it when I was selected as a speaker,” says the 21-year old Nocum.
One Young World is the “preeminent global forum for young leaders aged 18-30”. It brings together the best young leaders from every country in the world for a week to build connections across borders and design solutions to the biggest problems of the planet.
The One Young World Summit is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of nationalities represented in the event.
To be able to attend the summit, young leaders go through a rigorous selection process to become a delegate. Out of more than 1,300 delegates, only around 30 delegate speakers are chosen to speak on the summit’s six plenary sessions: Education, Peace & Security, Global Business, Environment, Human Rights, and Leadership & Government.
Delegate speakers will be sharing the stage with the main speakers of the summit. Past speakers and guests include President Bill Clinton, Kofi Annan, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Sir Richard Branson, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Jamie Oliver, and more.
“I will be speaking under the session of Peace & Security. I’m excited to share about how peace is becoming a possibility in the Philippines. While the world mourns for the deaths in Lebanon and Paris, there is no better time than now to talk about conflict and terrorism with other young leaders and discuss how these problems can be addressed,” Nocum shares.
Nocum is the head of peace and education organization Kristiyano-Islam Peace Library – or KRIS Library. Since 2008, KRIS Library has built six libraries, provided nearly 400 scholarships, and donated 50,000 books to areas affected by conflict and poverty. Many of their project sites are in known terrorist camps in Mindanao.
Apart from receiving the honor of being selected as a delegate speaker, Nocum was also given the coveted C Asean scholarship to attend the One Young World Summit. Out of 1,000 young leaders from the ASEAN region, Nocum and Sotheary You from Cambodia were selected.
C Asean – a social enterprise that aims to strengthen collaboration among businesses to promote a high growth environment in the region – will be sponsoring Nocum’s ticket to Thailand, her accommodations, and the£2,750 admission fee to the summit.
Nocum was also selected to represent the Philippines and speak on the “Call On COP” livestream. Call On COP is a 24-hour live broadcast directed to 196 heads of state by 196 young leaders calling for sustainable solutions to climate change.
Currently, Nocum is also an Industrial Engineering student from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. She recently joined Singapore Management University’s Southeast Asian Global Undergraduate Leadership Program (SEAGULL) with 20 other promising young leaders from ASEAN.
One Young World will be held at the Bangkok Convention Centre at Centara Grand. Delegates will attend the six plenary sessions and will be given the opportunity to travel to local business locations and cultural centers.
One Young World is a UK-based non-profit organization that organized its first summit in 2010. Past summits were held in London, Zurich, Pittsburgh, Johannesburg, and Dublin.
